Gentamicin is a potent aminoglycoside antibiotic used to treat severe infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria (e.g., E. coli, Pseudomonas), including:Life-threatening infections: Sepsis, meningitis, pneumonia
Urinary tract infections (complicated cases)
Bone/joint infections (combined with other antibiotics)
Eye/ear infections (as topical drops/ointment)
2. Dosage & Administration
Adults/Children:IV/IM injection: 3–6 mg/kg/day (divided into 1–3 doses)
Neonates: 2.5 mg/kg every 12–24 hours (adjusted for weight/age)
Topical use: Apply 2–4 times daily to affected area (eye/ear/skin)
Key notes:
Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) required (peak/trough levels)
Avoid prolonged use (>7–10 days) to reduce toxicity risk
