Pharmacology and Mechanism of Action

Metronidazole belongs to the nitroimidazole class of antibiotics and works by interfering with the DNA synthesis of bacteria and protozoa. Once inside the microbial cell, metronidazole undergoes a reduction reaction, leading to the formation of reactive nitrogen species. These reactive compounds bind to microbial DNA, causing strand breakage, inhibition of nucleic acid synthesis, and ultimately, cell death.         2.      Protozoal Infections
             •    Amoebiasis (caused by Entamoeba histolytica)
             •    Giardiasis (caused by Giardia lamblia)
             •    Trichomoniasis (caused by Trichomonas vaginalis)
        3.      Surgical Prophylaxis
             •    Used to prevent postoperative infections, especially in colorectal surgery, gynecological procedures, and dental surgery.
