Mechanism of ActionTetanus antitoxin is used to neutralize unbound tetanus toxin, which is produced by Clostridium tetani. This toxin causes tetanus by interfering with the release of inhibitory neurotransmitters, leading to muscle rigidity and spasms. The antitoxin works by binding to the toxin and preventing it from binding to nerve cells, thereby neutralizing its effects.Dosage Instructions
  • Human Tetanus Immune Globulin (HTIG): The preferred antitoxin is HTIG. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a single intramuscular (IM) dose of 500 units. This dose should be administered as soon as tetanus is suspected, with part of the dose infiltrated around the wound. HTIG should be given at a different site from tetanus toxoid.
  • Equine Antitoxin: If HTIG is unavailable, equine antitoxin can be used as an alternative. An intradermal test dose of 0.1 mL in a 1:10 dilution should be administered first to check for hypersensitivity reactions.
Storage ConditionsTetanus antitoxin should be stored according to the manufacturer's instructions. Generally, it should be kept refrigerated at 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F) to maintain its potency and stability. Avoid freezing, as this may damage the product.
