Glutathione (GSH) is an endogenous tripeptide composed of glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine, with CAS numbers 70-18-8 (reduced form) /27025-41-8 (oxidized form GSSG). It is a core antioxidant and detoxification substance in human cells. It is widely distributed in tissues such as the liver, kidneys and red blood cells. Its core functions are antioxidation, detoxification and immune regulation, and it is applied in the fields of medicine, skin care and health products.
mechanism of action and application
1.Core physiological functions
Antioxidant: Eliminates free radicals (superoxide anions, hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radicals), protecting cell membranes, DNA, and proteins from oxidative damage; Maintaining the intracellular GSH/GSSG ratio (normally about 100:1) is a key indicator for judging cellular oxidative stress.
Detoxification: In the liver, it combines with heavy metals (lead, mercury, arsenic), drugs (acetaminophen), and environmental toxins (formaldehyde, benzene), converting them into water-soluble metabolites and excreting them from the body. It is the core substance for liver detoxification.
Immune regulation: Enhance the activity of lymphocytes and macrophages, promote the proliferation of immune cells, and improve the body's resistance; Participate in the antioxidant protection of red blood cells and prevent hemolysis.
Other functions: As a coenzyme for multiple enzymes (such as glutathione peroxidase), regulating gene expression, inhibiting apoptosis, and participating in amino acid transport.
2. Main application scenarios
Specific application in the field, dosage form/form
Medical treatment for drug-induced liver injury, alcoholic liver disease and viral hepatitis; Adjuvant radiotherapy and chemotherapy for tumors (reducing toxicity); Injection for hemolytic anemia (intravenous/intramuscular), oral tablets
Skin care essence and cream for inhibiting tyrosinase activity (whitening and fading spots), anti-oxidation and anti-aging (repairing ultraviolet damage), and improving skin sensitivity (addition concentration 0.5% - 2%)
Safety and precautions
1. Adverse reactions
Oral administration: Nausea, diarrhea and abdominal distension may occur occasionally (more likely to occur when the dose is greater than 1000mg per day), which can be relieved by taking it after meals.
Injection: Rare rashes, fever, dizziness, and severe allergic reactions (breathing difficulties) require immediate discontinuation of the drug.
2. Contraindications and Use with caution
Contraindications: People allergic to glutathione;
Use with caution: Pregnant or lactating women (insufficient safety data), patients with diabetes (may slightly affect insulin sensitivity), and those with impaired liver or kidney function (monitoring required).
3. Drug interactions
Combined with vitamin C, it can enhance the antioxidant effect.
When used in combination with chemotherapy drugs, there should be an interval of 4 to 6 hours (to avoid affecting the efficacy of chemotherapy).
Avoid combination with sulfonamides and penicillins (as it may reduce the efficacy of the latter).
